About me

I am a sci-fi and fantasy author from Dublin, Ireland. After a short six years of living in Edinburgh, I am back living in Dublin with my wife and pet dog.

Currently, I am writing a fantasy trilogy called The Rule of Light. Fantasy is one of my favourite genres. I have spent more time re-reading fantasy books than any other genre. My first love was sci-fi and will always remain my number one genre.

Reading is my favourite way to use up my spare time away from the computer. I try to read widely, but I always fall back into my comfort zone of sci-fi and fantasy. Reading as much as I do is what led me to becoming a writer. I never had a strong desire to write from childhood. I fell in love with all the minor details I found on the pages of other books and wanted to create my own worlds with their very own fingerprint.

I am currently working full time as a web developer and only squeeze in writing time in the evenings and weekends.

Questions you didn't ask

BRANDON SANDERSON

Brandon's world building and scope of storytelling is unreal. What he is creating at the moment with the cosmere is insane. I don't think I will ever make a world as big or complex, but it is wonderful to see how far some can take it.

TED CHIANG

Every story of Ted's explores some part of the human experience in a way I never expected. He has a way of writing truly engaging science fiction that also makes you ask questions about yourself that you might have never considered.

TERRY PRATCHETT

Nobody can write social commentary in a fantasy setting and make it as funny as Terry did. Discworld is my comfort zone. A few times a year I delve into the stories of Ankh-Morpork and they always leave a smile on my face.

JOE ABERCROMBIE

Gritty, dark and realistic is what I would call Joe's writing. The stories and characters he has created feel so real to me. I find often find myself wincing at the torture scenes, the fight scenes and even some dialogue. Wincing in a good way. Not to say I want to write in this way, but to have a fraction of what Joe has would set me on a good path.

IAIN M BANKS

The Culture series was my first introduction to space in the written word. I had a love of sci-fi from tv shows such as Stargate and Star Trek, but nothing prepared me for how off the wall sci-fi could be. The adventures of these stories bring me such enjoyment, and I would love to bring this to my writing.

1984, George Orwell

Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes

The Name of the Wind, Patrick Rothfuss

Ringworld, Larry Niven

Anathem, Neal Stephenson

I originally studied computer games design. I had dream of becoming a games designer that made the kinds of games I loved to play. This didn't work out, but the grounding in programming really helped me getting started in the world of web development.

Neither of these career paths is where I want to end up anymore. I would love to write full time, but I know that is only an option for some. One day I would like to be one of those lucky ones.

Yes. Her name is Delilah. She is an english pointer, and we love her so much.

Delila the dog

We were lucky enough to get her from a rescue and give her a loving home. She can be a little wild at times. A good run around really helps her settle and chill for the rest of the day.

She will do a few tricks on command, but those commands need to be in Irish. She may be an english pointer but she only speaks Irish.

This is something I get asked from time to time, and the answer is yes. I work full time as a web developer, meaning I do all the code bits, but I leave the design of the websites to others. They are far better at that side of things. So if I was to build your website it would likely function very well but look awful.

My website has taken me much longer that I would have liked because it is one of a few websites I designed myself.
